To have faith and see the moon

Have you ever wished you had more faith?
We all feel that way at times. Something happens in our lives that makes us wish we dared to have more faith or at least some faith. This isn't new just for our time in history.
The Bible tells us about a man who came to Jesus with his son, who had major problems with seizures. Even though Jesus' disciples had prayed for the boy, he wasn't healed. Until Jesus saw his need and healed him! So, what was the problem?
It's within this context that Jesus says something extraordinary. Jesus said, "If you have the faith of a mustard seed, you can move mountains." A mustard seed is very small. So, what does Jesus mean by this?
I think He's telling us that the size of our faith is not what matters. What matters is how great and big our God is… the object of our faith. It's not about me or you… it's all about God.
Tom Wright writes (paraphrased by me), "If you want to see the moon, the size of the window you look through is not what matters. What matters is that it's facing in the right direction! Even a small crack in a wall is big enough to see the moon if it faces the right direction. A gigantic window on the wrong side of the house does absolutely no good at all."
This is a picture of what faith is like. Who do we turn to, or in what direction are we facing?
Our family was in Breckenridge, Colorado, for New Year's Eve many years ago. We'd just finished our New Year's dinner and were getting ready, with great expectations, to watch the fireworks over the mountain and ski resort from our balcony.
The time for the fireworks came, and we saw absolutely nothing. We heard the tremendous explosions and ran in the direction of the sound of the fireworks. But by the time we finally reached the right side of the building… the fireworks were over! We missed the whole experience because we stubbornly stayed on our balcony and tried to look from the wrong side of the building.
When it comes to faith, it's essential which direction we are facing.
Are we looking to "gods" we or someone else has created, or are we looking to the One and only God, who has all power in heaven and on earth?
It makes all the difference.
Turned towards Him, in expectation, with a faith that might even be as small as a mustard seed, we can experience amazing things and watch our faith grow. So, don't give up if you're struggling with your faith. What's important is not the size of your faith or mine but how great and mighty our God truly is!
It's all about Him!
